A guide for divers visiting Vanuatu islands

Divers with fish at an underwater reef
Diving is an excellent choice for Vanuatu visitors looking for an adventure, with some
great locations around the islands and unique experiences underwater.

I don’t know about you, but for me, it is that time of the year when I like to start planning my vacation. Certainly, we all have different preferences and tastes in choosing our perfect vacation spot. Many of us cannot imagine booking a vacation if sunbeds and sandy beaches are not a part of the equation. So, if this is the case, you should consider visiting Vanuatu.

Why is visiting Vanuatu a great choice

Should you decide to move out of Manhattan and relocate to another city, you might want to consider going somewhere tropical. You will need a break from all of the city rumble. Vanuatu might be best known as an excellent location for divers. Many divers are visiting Vanuatu with the goal of experiencing their crystal-clear waters, multiple shipwrecks, beautiful corals and exciting marine life.

Therefore, if you are a diver, this is a place to be. However, if the rest of your family aren’t into diving, don’t worry. There are still great activities they can enjoy. The islands are filled with wellness and spa resorts, friendly locals and dreamy sandy beaches. So, if diving isn't their activity of choice, they will have plenty of other options. Certainly, they will not be bored.

Just a few facts about Vanuatu

In order to decide if visiting Vanuatu is a good option for you, here are some facts that you might want to know. Vanuatu is located in the Pacific Ocean. Not far away from Australia and New Zealand. It is made up of 83 islands and their total population is 200 000 people. One of the best things about this exotic and beautiful place is that it hasn’t reached its potential and peak in tourism. Thus, the islands aren’t overcrowded. The locals are known to be extremely polite and welcoming to visitors.

One of the great sea animals that you are likely to encounter while diving in Vanuatu
are sea turtles, one of the Earth's most ancient creatures.

When you should go

The temperatures are pretty high all year round. Therefore, it is more or less warm. What might be most important for drivers is to know the temperature of the water. The sea water tends to be the warmest from late November to the beginning of April. Another thing that you should keep in mind is the rainfall period. This period largely overlaps with the previously mentioned time frame. So, rainfall is most frequent at the beginning of the year. It starts dialing down usually in April. Therefore, if you want to experience Vanuatu diving, think about when it would be best to visit this beautiful destination.

Best locations for diving adventures in Vanuatu

So, we already mentioned that Vanuatu is made up of many islands. You might be wondering how you can make the right choice and know where to go if you want to have a diving adventure. Don’t worry, we are happy to share our top diving spots in Vanuatu. Without further delay, here they are.

The SS President Coolidge

It is located close to a beach of Island Espiritu Santo. It is a brief walk from the beach, to the deepest end of this marvelous shipwreck. This is one of the biggest and most available shipwrecks that you can experience during your diving adventure. You can literally swim through the wrecks. The entire thing has the length of almost 200m. As a result, this attraction will occupy you for days. You cannot experience it all in just a day or two.

Being one of the most active WWII theatres, the South Pacific waters, including Vanuatu
islands, are litterred by ship and plane wrecks, which now make for great diving locations.

Have you heard of The Million Dollar Beach?

This is another diving location that you must not miss. It is also located very close to the beach, just like The SS President Coolidge. During World War II, a cargo ship tipped over. The ship was filled with things like jeeps, tractors and other large items that found their resting place on the bottom of the Ocean. The cargo was huge. Hence, the name of this diving playground. It is a million-dollar beach for that particular reason. Today, all of that infrastructure is home to colorful collars and a large number of fishes. Divers that experienced this beach say that they have seen fish and collars in color they never experienced before. Don’t miss this place.

The underwater post office

This is not a trick nor a joke. There really is an underwater post office that you can visit. They really will send your postcards for you. If you are looking for a treasure hunt, this might not be a place for you. However, if you are looking to snap a neat picture and experience the only underwater post office in the world, then make sure your postcards are ready. This unique establishment is located on Hideaway Island, which is very popular with divers, a close distance away from Port Vila.

Dugongs

Many drivers hope that they will have an encounter with a dugong. These beautiful, peaceful, giant mammals are very shy. This is why it is extremely hard to run into them. You must dive as much as possible if you hope to find them. Dugongs are very large. They can grow as long as 3 meters and they can weigh over 300 kilograms. The important thing to know is that they do not present any type of danger to the divers. They are very calm and shy creatures.

For a real treat on your diving adventures in Vanuatu, you could hope to have an encounter
with dugong, a large marine mammal that is rather shy and not dangerous to divers.

What if diving is not your cup of tea?

Well, we already mentioned that there are many onshore activities that you can do. However, if you don’t like to dive but you still love being in the water, then snorkeling might be a great option for you. You might not be able to experience the shipwrecks and the underwater post office, but don’t worry. There are beautiful corals and marine life that you can experience just buy snorkeling on the surface.

All things considered, we talked about some prime destinations for divers when visiting Vanuatu. However, don’t think that these are the only fun places you should experience. We barely scratched the surface. We haven’t even begun to talk about an active volcano and treasure hunts. So, don’t stop here. Research some more and learn everything you need to know about diving and visiting Vanuatu. Very soon, you will be finalizing your booking arrangements. It is very hard to say no to this beautiful destination.
